BLOG — BUYER GUIDE / FINISH

Choose the Right Paint Finish for Every Surface

Paint finish (sheen) affects washability, durability, and how the surface looks. Here is how to match the finish to the surface.

Walls — Matte or Eggshell

For living rooms, dining rooms, and bedrooms, matte or eggshell hides imperfections and gives an even, low-glare look. Eggshell adds a bit more washability for general living areas.

High-Traffic and Moisture — Satin

Kitchens, baths, hallways, and kids' rooms do better with satin. It stands up to scrubbing and resists moisture better than lower sheens.

Trim, Doors, and Cabinets — Semi-Gloss

Semi-gloss is the standard for baseboards, casings, doors, and cabinets. It is highly washable and durable — important for surfaces that get touched and cleaned often. Note: it highlights imperfections, so prep must be thorough.

Exterior — Sun-Rated Finishes

Exterior paints are formulated differently from interior. Low-sheen exterior finishes balance washability with a look that hides dust. We choose exterior product and sheen based on Sacramento sun exposure and the surface.
