Choosing on Price Alone
The lowest bid is often low because scope was cut — prep, priming, coats, or protection. Compare scopes, not just numbers. A complete scope at a fair price beats an incomplete scope at a low one.
Not Asking About Prep
Prep is the easiest thing to cut and the biggest reason paint fails early. Ask specifically what prep is included: patching, sanding, priming, caulking. If you do not get clear answers, that is a red flag.
Accepting a Verbal Quote
A number without a written scope is a starting price, not a quote. The scope should list surfaces, prep, coats, product, and timeline. Anything not in writing is subject to interpretation.
Not Asking Who Does the Work
Ask who the crew is and whether they work for the company regularly. Subcontractors are not always a problem, but you want oversight on paint day.
