Repaint Timeline: From Prep to Move-In Ready

A repaint has a real timeline — and knowing it helps you plan. Here is what to expect from prep through a fully cured, move-in-ready finish.

Prep (Usually the Longest Phase)

Protection, patching, sanding, and priming take the most time on a room needing work. A clean room with good walls prep quickly; a damaged room takes much longer. Prep is the phase that decides how long the finish lasts.

Painting (1–2 Days for Most Rooms)

Cutting in, rolling, and finish coats on trim and doors. Each coat dries before the next. A single room is often 1–2 days; a whole home takes several days to a week depending on scope.

Dry to Touch vs Full Cure

Most interior paint is dry to touch in 4–6 hours and re-coatable the same day. But full cure — when the finish reaches maximum hardness and washability — takes 2–4 weeks. Plan to avoid bumping walls for 24 hours and hanging heavy items for about a week.
